  • August has been one of the most successful months since the inception of our Ages & Stages (ASQ) developmental program. Since August 1, 161 new children have been enrolled with 97 children having an ASQ questionnaire completed.
  • We provided trainings on utilizing the ASQ to these partners: PlayCousins, YMCA, Healthy Beginnings Connect Us (HBCU) and the Louisville Free Public Library increasing awareness of and the effectiveness of the tool. We also attended an event with Backside Learning Center where families were able to enroll in ASQ and complete their child’s ASQ on-site. Families were paired with medical students who assisted in ASQ completion. Together, we were able to complete ASQs for over 10 families in one night.​
  • Over the last month, our Ages & Stages team has been attending multiple story times with the Louisville Free Public Library providing almost 300 books to children and families in our community.​
  • A recent story from one of the families participating in our Ages & Stages developmental program:
    • “Our family had a wonderful time completing our 18-month-old’s developmental screening session. We made it a whole family affair—big brother loved demonstrating different things we were trying to see if our girl could do, and the whole family enjoyed watching her build skills we didn’t yet know she had. It was also a joy to see how immensely proud of herself she was as we cheered her on. The biggest fun we had was discovering how much she loves stacking blocks! We hadn’t pulled out the blocks for her to play with yet, but with a little prompting she started building big towers of uneven blocks and even counted to 10 as she built them! We had no idea she could stack toys so well or count to ten until this screening! Thank you for the opportunity to be even more wowed by our little girl and to do it in the context of a community that we know would be there to support us no matter the outcomes of her screening.”​
  • The Floyd County Library has started Play with Purpose, a nine week-long play group that provides caregivers with activities and a toy each week. They had 9 families attend the first date. ​
  • The Southern Indiana ASQ team will be hosting an end-of-year partner convening and we invite you to join us as we celebrate the progress we’ve made together. This will be an opportunity to network, connect and share updates with other community partners across Southern Indiana. Metro United Way will also share information about our upcoming ASQ RFP for organizations interested in joining the ASQ work.​
  • Our Ready for K collaboration hosted its annual convening of partners supporting Louisville’s Lead Safe Strategic Plan. Over 20 community partners participated in planning activities for the next year that align with the strategic plan and efforts to reduce lead poisoning in children throughout Jefferson County.
  • The Youth Success Team hosted the second annual SummerBlock Party for Youth Success Network Partners on Friday July24th. Nearly 100 folks showed up to network, connect, and enjoy food, refreshments and fun.​

  • Our Youth Success Team partnered with the University of Louisville to host a two-day Youth Mental Health First Aid Certification in early August 6. 19 adults who work with youth were certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid.​
  • We received 53 applications for the Youth Social Action Project Grant. This is a record number of applications. We expect to announce the 15 funded organizations by September 1.

Strong Households

  • In the month of July, our Kentucky 211 help referral line fielded1,463 calls from members of Jefferson, Shelby, Oldham, Bullitt, Henry, Nelson, Spencer, and Trimble counties. The top request categories were related to:
    • Rental assistance (1218)
    • Electric service (1037)
    • Food pantries (252)
  • Indiana 211 fielded 240 calls from Clark, Floyd, and Harrison counties in the month of July. The main requests of callers were around:
    • Housing (661)
    • Utility assistance (373)
    • Food/meals (297)
  • Metro United Way will host its first ever Community Champions Breakfast on Wednesday, October 21 to recognize supporters of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program through the Louisville Asset Building Coalition. This amazing effort supports more than 8,000 low-to-moderate income households each year to file their tax returns, but we would like to serve even more!  For more information on this event or how you or your company can get involved, please email John Nevitt at john.nevitt@metrounitedway.org​
  • Metro United Way, in partnership with Canopy KY, continues to build a pilot of Mission Marketplace as a means of supporting nonprofits interested in growing mission-aligned products and services to create a sustainable source of revenue. This fall, we will be working with Feed Louisville and their Zest program to validate our model for future refinements and expansion.  Please be on the lookout for future updates on this newly emerging initiative.​
  • Our Clinical Entrepreneurship Program has been approved for 21 hours of CEUs through the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville for social workers in both Kentucky and Indiana. This is an incredible bonus for the behavioral health clinicians participating in our current cohort who are interested in opening a private practice.  A special thank you to UofL for their interest and support in this valuable learning series.​
  • The Housing Alliance of Louisville hosted a panel discussion entitled Navigating Housing with Disability and Medical Complexity. Representatives from The Center for Accessible Living and SOS were panelists, and it was moderated by a representative from Urban Strategies.

  • On Monday, August 10 we held another event in our Impact to Advocacy series. This event focused on the launch of ALICE® data in our community that highlights that 2 out of 5 households in our 7-county region – including those who are working – struggle to make ends meet.

Equitable Community

  • A member of the Equitable Community team recently spoke with a group of local youth about gun violence, creating space for conversation around violence prevention, choices, and building safer communities.​
  • Young Men United kicked off another school year at W.E.B. Du Bois Academy, continuing our ongoing partnership supporting high school juniors and seniors through mentorship, exposure, and opportunities for future success.​
  • Development of our new simulated learning tool, the Wealth, Poverty & Opportunity Simulation, has reached an exciting milestone. The experience has been developed and will soon be introduced to Metro United Way staff, providing a new tool for exploring how history, policy, and systems shape economic opportunity and outcomes.​
